0197: Jumping/stuttering problems - v13.0 software

After the introduction of the v13.0 software fix in relation to 0167, some users are finding that the fix makes no difference to them. For those people interested, Vestel are requesting more information from affected users who are using the v13.0 software. Please add a note below including the answers to at least the first 8 questions - the rest are relatively technical, so don't worry if you are unable to answer all the questions:

1. PVR make/model? (e.g. Digihome DTR80)
2. Which retailer/shop/website did you buy it from and when?
3. The name of the transmitter that your box receives its signal from? (or your postcode if you do not know)
4. Which channels are likely to have the problem?
5. Did you have exactly the same problems before the software update, or has there been some improvement?
6. Does the problem exist only during the record activity with live channel watch or exists on normal live channel without any record activity?
7. Is there any other specific steps / conditions which leads this problem to occur always / more often etc?
8. If Digital Switchover has happened in your area, did this problem start then, or did you still have the problems before Digital Switchover?
9. Is the problem present on every channel in the same mux?
10. If you know the mux / UHF channel numbers that your box is tuned to, please list them
11. What are the signal levels on each of the 5 or 6 muxes given on the manual channel scan screen?
12. Is there any analogue channel in the RF spectrum? Which channel? (in case you live in a region where DSO has not happened yet)

All information gathered here will be collated and sent directly to Vestel.

0202: stuttering/jumping problems after 13.0 upgrade

Logik LPVR88 had fairly bad stuttering/jumping problems with version 10.2. If anything it is worse since the upgrade to version 13.0

2. Ebay (refurbished) July 2010
3.Caldbeck (Cumbria) main transmitter.
4. Most channels during playback of recordings. Particularly bad with ITV3.
5. Similar problems before software upgrade but has now occasionally developed a 30 second time difference between picture aand sound.
6. Problem only with playback of recordings.
7. ??
8. Digital switchover well before I bought this PVR.
9. Not sure of relationship between MUX and severity of problems apart from ITV3 being very bad.
10. ?? All channels between 21 & 39.
11. Signal levels good. No problems with live programmes.
12. No analogue channels in this area.

Ever since the digital update any recordings other than BBC are impossible to watch, because of jumping and stuttering.Also other channels are unwatchable whilst recording any channel other than BBC

0182: Stutter / Freeze on Playback - ditto On Viewing if Recording

Excepting all BBC channels, recordings play back with sound and picture stutter every few seconds. Same stutter experienced on live viewing if the pvr is set to record any channel. Channel 4 is particularly affected.

Observed: Live view stutter seems to be linked with volume changes on sound transmission (e.g. when music starts to play)

Picture and sound jumping on Granada from Winter Hill
Granada on TV 100%, so problem is with the PVR
I have done a Manual Tune of 5 UHF chanell # 62 59 58 61 55 but no improvment
The PVR worked 100% before the change over

Can you give any help?

I manually updated the system after 6 months of wiating today only to find that it is hung up on initializing disk. Have tried turning off then on but no good, same emessage appears

0200: Picture freezes or jumps to different channel

Watching 4Music, channel froze, recovered by selecting PR+ or PR-. Happened several times within 15 minute period. Also within this period - sound from different stream instead of 4Music but with 4Music picture and it jumped to Sky Sports News but Now and Next showed 4Music details. Switched to BBC2 and picture froze again - recovered by changing channel. By this time fed up so did full power reset by pulling mains plug.
Had had a problem few days earlier - tried to record Tour de France on E4. On playing back recording it froze a few minutes in but there was still audio playing back recorded from a different stream. Had to fast forward for about 10 minutes before picture unfroze and sound re-synchronised.

After performing a power reset box appears to work ok

0175: Recording Non BBC channels causes picture freezes and sound breakup

Since 2nd Dec 2009. When Non BBC1 or 2 channels are recorded the picture on whichever channels are being watched starts to freeze and sound breaks up - all programs and recordings are unwatchable.

0199: Jumping on Playback

When playing back on ITV (winter Hill) the programme is prone to jumping scenes.
This sympton first occurred on digital switch over in December 2009 whilst on V.10.2
The problem was resolved by V.12.8. With latest AOD of V.13.0 the problem has returned.

0193: Recordings duplicated on "+1" channels

When recording a program on (for example) Ch4 it is also recorded on Ch4+1 an hour later. This seems to happen on all the "+1" channels.
The software is V1.6 so hopefully fixed in later versions. How can I get hold of the latest version 2.2 and how to load it via the scart socket?

Since download of v13.0, if info button pressed when watching channel Short now/next bar displays, but when pressed again simply disappears instead of showing extended program details.

The ability to double-press the Info button and see text details of the programme being viewed has diasppeared since the upgrade, a week ago. Happens on all channels.

Channel 55 signal stength v good 80%
Channel 58 signal stength v good 80%
Channel 59 signal stength v good 80%
Channel 61 signal stength v good 78%
Channel 62 signal stength v good 75%

The problems with this pvr have only started since Winter Hill had the switch over to digital. The picture skips and jumps when recording one channel and viewing another. The same problem with time shift and playing back recorded programs. It is practically useless as a recorder. Really hope a software fix can be found soon.

I have waited (im)patiently for the v13.0 update, in the hope that my troubles will be over. Last night it was upgraded - IT HAS MADE NO DIFFERENCE WHATSOEVER. Unlike most people (it seems) I have never had problems with ITV, etc, only with BBC channels (all of them). Now that the update has not solved the problem, what do I do now - throw the wretched thing into the bin?

Any help/info/etc gratefully received.

0167: Jumping/stuttering problems after Winter Hill DSO

After digital switchover (2nd December 2009) of the Winter Hill transmitter, owners of Vestel PVRs (see http://www.vestelpvr.futaura.co.uk/allmodels.php [^] for a full list of brands/models) in the Granada region having been reporting problems with their PVRs with common symptoms being live tv and/or recordings jumping/stuttering which never happened before the switchover, which may happen all the time or just when recording (perhaps specific channels only).

If you are one of the affected PVR owners, you are encouraged to add a note to this page. Before doing so, please perform the following:

1. Press the MENU button on the remote and navigate to the installation page of the setup menu.
2. Choose the "First time installation" option - this will erase your channel list, favourites, timers and other settings, but your recordings will remain.
3. Follow the prompts as they appear but choose NOT to perform an automatic channel scan when asked.
4. Instead, press the MENU button again and navigate to the installation page of the setup menu.
5. Choose the "Manual channel scan" option.
6. Enter "55" using the remote and make a note of the signal quality and an approximate percentage reading of the signal strength.
7. Now press "OK" on the remote
8. Once scanning is complete, go back to step 6 and repeat the process four more times instead entering the following numbers: 58, 59, 61 and 62.
9. All channels from Winter Hill should now be scanned in and you can use the PVR as normal to see if the problems remain.

Whether the above solves the problem, or if the symptoms still persist, please add a note below including the following details:

1. PVR make/model (e.g. Hitachi HDR162)
2. Software version (can be found in the configuration page of the setup menu)
3. PVR hardware model - T810, T816, T825 or T845R (can usually be found on the stick on the underside of the unit)
4. Your postcode (just the first part if you'd rather not post it in full)
5. The signal quality and strength readings for each of the 5 channels from the above procedure
6. Description of the symptoms and any other information you think is relevant (if you need to add any information later, please login and edit your existing entry)

0195: Favourites list does not affect EPG

0184: Stuttering/Jumping

Picture and sound are constantly stuttering/jumping to such an extent that a 1 hour recording is played back in 30 minutes! Only happens when recording from ITV since DSO 2 Dec 09 from WinterHill. BBC programs are unaffected.

When recording television programs from channels 55,58,59 both the program and recording jumps and stutters. Programs recorded from channels 61 and 62 seem to be OK

Picture & sound stutter or jump 250mS to 500mS each time, roughly every few seconds (not regular) when unit records. It is evident on live TV and on the recording. When not recording, the picture & sound are fine.

0170: Stuttering and jumping

When the pvr is recording the other channels "freeze" intermittently and then proceed as normal. This happens every few seconds to the extent that the programmes cannot be watched.
Whilst watching the recording it will skip sections so that an hour programme can be watched in 20 minutes. BBC programmes are however unaffected by this and can be watched/recorded normally.

0169: Hitachi HDR162 only recording BBC Channels after Digital Switchover.

Transmitter “Winter Hill Bolton” Channels: 55; 58; 59; 61 and 62.

This unit worked as expected without any problems on all channels until the Digital Switchover on Wednesday 2nd December 2009.

After the switchover I found the unit receives ALL CHANNELS as before without any problems, but when any ITV Channel; “Yesterday”; “Film4” and some others are selected for RECORDING, the picture and sound freezes intermittently and consequently jumps.
This occurs on playback of the recording, and also on the programme itself if it is being watched live. As soon as RECORD is selected, the problem occurs when watching ANY ITV program on air.

However, this problem doesn’t occur when recording ANY BBC program.
Any BBC programme can be recorded and viewed at the same time perfectly.
The BBC Programmes come from Channel 62 (PSB1).

I have a Panasonic Hard Drive DVD recorder which works perfectly.
My Samsung Television receiver works perfectly.
I have a Digital Aerial fitted outside on my chimney.
The signal strength indicator on my Panasonic DVD records full strength (10 units).
At first, I wondered if the signal was overloading the Hitachi HDR162, so I fitted a 10dB Attenuator in-line with the Aerial feeder. This brings the increased signal strength back to the old value. The problem remained unchanged.

I connected the Hitachi HDR162 to a different Aerial and a different Television receiver and the same problem arose.

Last evening I tried to record a program on ITV2 whilst watching it live (just for a test). The picture was unwatchable and the sound became unstable. I tried to stop the recording so I could watch it live (as the picture and sound is normal when not recording), but all the buttons on the remote control were dead. I switched to my Samsung Television receiver to watch the program leaving the Hitachi HDR162 to switch itself off after the recording. It didn’t switch off, so I had to disconnect the mains plug from the socket to turn the machine off and end the recording.

I have contacted ARGOS and they inform me that there is no repair service available for this receiver; they cannot offer me a replacement, so they can only offer me a refund as I have had it eight months and it is still under guarantee.
I didn’t take them up on their offer, as I can still record BBC channels on the Hitachi HDR162 and record other programmes on my Panasonic DVD recorder.
I feel that this problem could be solved if HITACHI sent an Over-air Download, but I feel it is very unlikely.

0192: During the course of a single recording, my T825 PVR changed channel six times.

I recorded the programme 'Mastercrafts' scheduled for 1 hour, on BBC2 (channel 2 from Winter Hill multiplex BBCA on channel C62-). The recording started late, in mid-programme, though this was probably because we were using the box on other channels until we put it into standby at about 20 minutes past nine. During the next forty-two minutes the PVR recorded thirty-two minutes of programme from three different channels with six changes of channel.

Scheduled time for recording 21:00 to 22:00 on Friday 12 February 2010.
Recorded start time 21:18, recorded duration 31m 58s (actual elapsed time about 42 m).
Careful playback with attention to the programme duration counter give the following log:

00m 00s Starts recording mid-programme (not the box's fault) on BBC2 (ch 2, mux BBCA on channel C62-).
02m 30s Beginning of stuttering/jumping as recorded time speeds up and slows down.
02m 43s A jump in recorded time to...
02m 57s Jump to recording VIVA (ch 21, mux ArqB on channel C55) with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
07m 52s Jump to recording Sky Sports News (ch 83, mux ArqA on channel C61-) with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
12m 43s Start of advertisements on Sky Sports News, still with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
13m 00s Return jump to BBC2 (ch 2, mux BBCA on channel C62-); some jumping in time, but vision and sound OK.
18m 08s Jump to recording VIVA again, during advertisements, with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
23m 17s Jump to recording Sky Sports News again, in programme time, with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
27m 26s Start of advertisements on Sky Sports News, still with stuttering/jumping and frequent jumps in time.
28m 26s Return jump to BBC2 again; some jumping in time, but vision and sound OK.
30m 15s Credits indicating end of programme at approaching 10 o'clock.
30m 41s BBC programme trailers.
31m 58s End of recording, some 42 minutes of real time after the indicated start time.

Please note that VIVA and Sky Sports News are not channels that we tend to watch. There were no timers set for either channel and neither would they have been recently-watched channels.

Why Submitted:
I have only submitted this bug report on the chance that it might be related to the general stuttering/jumping problem (could each jump be an attempt to change channel?) reported in many bug reports, including my own previous report, number 186.

0174: Picture and sound jumping

Since the digital switchover in november the picture and sound randomly jump, this seems to be worse during playback of a recording and even worse when playing back timeshifted recordings.
The machine was perfect before the switchover and I have phoned the digital helpline who say the signal is now 8 to 10 times stronger than before.

I got all Voltage on main PSU 5v -5v 32v 3,2v and 12v

Nothing displaying on clock display

Am i right in assuming it may have a corrupt firmware flash? and may need flashing via JTAG ?? Any help would be much apreciated

have re-tuned the box and it has lost all channels,and will not pick any up telling me to check antena,antena must be a good signal as it runs through the box to my tv,which has a perfect signal,any help would be appreciated.thanks.
