If you rewind and replay the stuttering parts of a recording, does it stutter in the exact same place? Or does it play ok on the second attempt, so it appears to be randomly happening in different parts of a recording?

I have a feeling this was caused by overheating; I turned the unit off as I noticed it was very very hot, left it an hour, then plugged it back in and started viewing from the same spot as the last "jump" and the video played back fine.

I've moved it to a cooler place (it was on top of a Sky+ box which was chucking out loads of heat) and will re-watch an extended programme and let you know the outcome - sorry if I've wasted any time.

Yes, these units are highly compact and you should always ensure adequate air flow around the unit and not cover the air vents on top at all. Certainly, placing on top of a hot device isn't going to help.

At least you've proven the aerial signal is adequate and that the errors were not in the recorded file (which would be worse). Feel free to report back if the problem persists.

Do also check that you haven't got a long list of expired/inactive timers - delete any that you don't need.

I ran it for 3 hour last night, no skips/pops or anything, so the new cooler position did the trick.
